US Airways was founded in 1937 as All American Aviation Inc. It has gone through a number of name changes over the years, being rebranded as US Airways in 1996. US Airways is headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, and its main hubs are Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. US Airways flies a diverse fleet that includes Airbus A319, Airbus A320, Airbus A321, Airbus A330, Boeing 737, Boeing 757, Boeing 767, and Embraer 190 aircraft. The average age of aircraft in the US Airways fleet is 12.1 years. Most of US Airways' Boeing aircraft are nearing retirement and will be replaced by Airbus aircraft. As a result of its merger with American Airlines in 2013, US Airways is the largest airline in the world. It operates more than 3,000 flights per day to more than 190 destinations in North America, South America, Europe, and the Middle East.
Online check-in is possible beginning 24 hours before the scheduled flight departure time, up until 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time for domestic flights and up until 90 minutes before for international flights. Passengers can check-in using their confirmation code, ticket number, or Dividend Miles rewards number and departure city. Passengers can print their boarding passes, pay for checked baggage, select their seats, and choose an upgrade through the online check-in system. Passengers checking in at the airport may use self-service kiosks or the full-service US Airways check-in counters. The recommended check-in time varies by airport, but passengers are advised to arrive with sufficient time to check their baggage and clear security. Passenger and baggage check-in close 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time for domestic flights and 60 minutes before for international flights. Passengers departing from the following airports must check-in at least 45 minutes before departure even for domestic flights: Atlanta, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Los Angeles (LAX), Miami, Newark, New York (JFK), Orlando Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, San Juan, Seattle, Tampa, and Washington Dulles (IAD).
Boarding Information
Passengers should arrive at the gate at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Passengers who are not waiting in the boarding at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time for domestic US flights or 30 minutes for international flights may be denied boarding and will not be compensated. US Airways flights are boarded first according to customer advantage categories, and then by seating zones. The first passengers to board are those traveling in First Class or uniformed US military personnel. Next are Dividend Miles Chairman's, Platinum and Gold Preferred, AAdvantage Executive Platinum / AAdvantage Platinum, and oneworld Sapphire and Emerald members. Followed by Dividend Miles Silver Preferred members, AAdvantage Gold members, and oneworld Ruby members. Next are passengers who have purchased PreferredAccess boarding.
Frequent Flyer Information – Dividend Miles
US Airways' frequent flyer program is called Dividend Miles. Members earn Dividend Miles for eligible flights on US Airways, American Airlines, or with oneworld partner airlines. Members traveling on US Airways will accrue Dividend Miles based on the actual number of miles flown. A 50% bonus will be given for travel in business or first class on US Airways. Dividend Miles offers different levels of membership depending on the number of miles/flights flown in a calendar year. Members who reach 25,000 miles or 30 flight segments earn Silver status, members who reach 50,000 miles or 60 flight segments earn Gold status, members who reach 75,000 miles or 90 flight segments earn Platinum status, and members who reach 100,000 miles or 120 flight segments earn Chairman's status. The different Dividend Miles membership levels offer privileges such as priority boarding, complimentary checked luggage, mileage bonuses and lounge access.
Passengers on US Airways flights are allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item (such as a purse, briefcase, or laptop bag). Maximum size for the carry-on bag is 14" x 9" x 22" (36 x 23 x 56 cm). Maximum weight for the carry-on bag is 40 pounds (18 kg) Items such as coats, umbrellas, and a reasonable amount of duty-free purchases may also be carried onboard for no additional charge. Passengers are also permitted to carry onboard any required mobility devices (such as a wheelchair, cane, or crutches), infant assistive devices (such as a stroller or car seat), and any required medical supplies or equipment within the size and weight restrictions for carry-on items. For electric and battery operated wheelchairs, please consult the airlines for very detailed specifications on the preparation of the item before checking it in or boarding with it. Note: carry-on baggage rules may be different for flights operated by American Airlines.
For travel within the USA or to Canada, Mexico, Central America, or the Caribbean, charges apply for each piece of checked baggage. The first checked bag fee is waived for travel to/from some of these destinations in Mexico, Haiti, Guatemala, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and other destinations in the vicinity. Please check with the airline for exception destinations. The first and second checked bag fees are waived for travel to/from Panama City, Panama and San Salvador, El Salvador.
For travel to South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, or Australia, passengers may check one bag free of charge. There is also no charge for a second checked bag for transpacific flights or flights to South America.
For transatlantic flights, a fee applies for a second checked bag.
Checked luggage fees will also be waived for first and business class passengers, active U.S. military with ID on personal travel, Dividend Miles members with silver or higher status, AAdvantage Gold members, and holders of eligible US Airways partner credit cards.
The maximum size for checked luggage is 62 inches in combined dimensions (height + width + length) with a maximum weight of 50 lbs. Oversized luggage will be subject to fees determined by destination. Overweight luggage will be subject to fees which are calculated based on weight category: either from 51-70 pounds or 71-100 pounds. Note that baggage weighing over 70 pounds will not be accepted for travel to Europe.
