AirTran Airways

Flying with AirTran

AirTran was founded in 1992 and first operated as ValuJet Airlines, before switching its name to AirTran in 1997. Flying primarily between the Midwestern and eastern United States, the carrier flew up to 700 flights daily and was the largest operator of the Boeing 717. It was purchased by Southwest Airlines in 2014 and is now fully integrated as Southwest Airlines. As part of Southwest Airlines, AirTran now operates as the world's largest low cost carrier and shares the same policies, from the Southwest check in to the airline's regulations and benefits.

Online Check-In

Online check-in is available 24 hours before scheduled flight departure. You can print your boarding pass or send it to your mobile phone.

Flight Status

It is recommended to check the status of all AirTran flights on the website by route or with the flight number.

Hand Baggage Allowance

All passengers are allowed to bring a standard item or hand luggage and one personal item.

Checked Baggage Allowance

On AirTran, travelers can check-in two bags for free. Sports equipment such as golf clubs or skis also flies free of charge. Checked baggage allowances vary by size and weight limitations. On all AirTran flights, the maximum weight for each bag is: 50 pounds with a maximum size of 62 inches (length + width + height) per checked piece of luggage. Oversized items or excess baggage weight will be subject to a fee of $75 per item/luggage. Oversized bags must not exceed 100 lbs or 80 inches.

Luggage on a domestic flight can easily be dropped off at the curb side check in. Any bag being checked-in less than 45 minutes prior to departure may be subject to getting tagged with a late check in and is not guaranteed to board the same flight.

For International flights, passengers cannot check in or check luggage at the airport's curb side check-in.
