The fact that Luxembourg is a destination that not many people mention to go on holidays suggests that in reality its inhabitants prefer to keep secret everything that makes reference to their small and cozy city.
It’s something completely understandable when you find out that the old city was declared as World Heritage since 1994!
In Luxembourg, you can find a great number of stunning castles and breathtaking nature around the Mosela River. On top of that, Luxembourg is the capital of one of the richest countries in the world, hidden between France, Germany and Belgium.

1. Take a stroll through the historic center
The best way to explore the city is on foot, especially due to the short distances that separate one place from the other. But bear in mind that Luxembourg is a city with “ups” and “downs, so you’ll find plenty of stairs and ramps to overcome. In reality, the city is divided into “high” and “low” – La Ville Haute and La Ville Basse.
2. Visit the Grand Ducal Palace
Did you know that Luxembourg is a sovereign state since 1353 and that the Dukes of this country still live in this palace? The Grand Ducal Palace is a an important symbol for the inhabitants of this small city.
3. Admire the Pétrusse Valley
Luxembourg is a city with plenty of rivers, and as a result, many bridges to cross. The Pétrusse river is one of the most famous rivers and passes through a valley that can also be visited. We recommend travelling during the spring, when the color of the magnolias makes this experience truly memorable.
4. Take a stroll through the Bock Casemates
Explore the underground galleries and casemates built during the Spanish occupation that served as shelter for soldiers and the population. It’s one of the most important points of interest in the city and allows one to have an idea of how was life in 1600.
5. Listen to the bells of the Notre-Dame Cathedral
The cathedral’s one-of-a-kind ceiling is one of the most characteristic images of the capital. The bells have a special sound that is played as a song. It’s worth being close to the cathedral to listen to the bells/song.
6. Enjoy the views from the Chemin de la Corniche
Also known as the “most beautiful balcony of Europe”. From here you can see the image found in most postcards of the city. The view is simply spectacular!
7. Taste some of the traditional dishes
Taking into account the country’s position, many of the traditional dishes of this city have influences from Germany, France, Belgium and even Spain. The kachkéis – a cheese influenced by the Spanish troops – or the judd mat gaardebounen – pork’s neck with beans and potatoes – are good examples.
8. Take a walk through the Grund district
A neighborhood with a bohemian and informal vibe that contrasts with other parts of the city. Look out for the Neumünster Abbey and the Natural History Museum.
9. One-day trip to Echternach
This city is also known as “Little Switzerland” and can be the perfect starting point to a pleasant bike tour. Don’t miss the old town and the main buildings like the Saint Peter and Paul church.
10. Spend a night in the Clausen district
It’s in the Mousel district and here you can find plenty of restaurants, bars and other typical spots. It’s the perfect place to end your trip to Luxembourg!
