The Carnival of Venice kicked-off right after Valentine’s Day this year and that means the masked celebration is already in full-swing. This year the 2014 Venice Carnival dates are February 15th until March 4th.

If you’ve had the chance to celebrate Carnival in Venice then you know that one of the most distinguishing features are the elaborate masks. Whether the mask is made out of leather, porcelain, or using the traditional glass technique, nowadays the more extravagant the mask the better. The history of the Venetian Carnival masks is highly debated and the origin is not entirely known, though some scholars state the mask originated as far back as the 13th century.
