The Summer Olympics have finally come to an end, going out with a bang with a spectacular closing ceremony.
In the end the US took home the “gold” for the most medals in London 2012 with a total of 104, 46 of them being gold, 29 silver, and 29 bronze. China came in second with a total of 87 medals. And Great Britain took third with 65 total medals.
With a total of 10,500 athletes in this year’s Olympics, the fight to reach the podium’s three steps was intense, but there are a few Olympians that really stood out and took home their fair share of medals. Let’s take a look at these medal-hogs (kidding of course) a little more in-depth, who knows, maybe it’s just something in the water in their hometowns!

Usain Bolt (Jamaica)
Age: 25
Hometown: Trelawny, Jamaica

Specialities: 100m, 200m, 4 x 100m relay – Usain took home golds in all of his events!
Random fact: He has 4 dogs named Spicy, Cassie, Dodo and Lala
Allyson Felix (USA)
Age: 26
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
How to get there?: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
Specialties: 100m, 200m, 4 x 100m relay, 4 x 400m relay – Allyson banked 3 out of 4 golds in her events.
Random fact: She was nicknamed “Chicken Legs” in high school due to her strength regardless of her slim stature
Swimming
Michael Phelps (USA)
Age: 27
Hometown: Baltimore, Maryland
How to get there?: Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI)
Specialties: 100m butterfly, 200m butterfly, 200m individual medley, 400m individual medley, 4 x 100m freestyle relay, 4 x 200m freestyle relay, 4 x 100m medley relay – Out of 7 total events Phelps took home 6 total medals, 4 gold and 2 silver
Random fact: As a child Phelp’s was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and started swimming as a way to release his pent up energy
Missy Franklin (USA)
Age: 17
Hometown: Centennial, Colorado
How to get there?: Denver International Airport (DEN)
Specialties: 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke, 4 x 100m freestyle relay, 4 x 200m freestyle relay, 4 x 100m medley relay – Missy took home 4 golds and 1 bronze out of 7 events in her first Olympics ever
Random fact: Missy is no little miss, at 6’1” with a 6’4” wing span and size 13 feet, she’s basically genetically engineered to be a fish in the water
Gymnastics – Artistic
Aliya Mustafina (Russia)
Age: 17
Hometown: Egorevsk, Russia
How to get there?: Domodedovo International Airport (DME)
Specialties: floor exercise, beam, individual all-around – Aliya made her way to each step on the podium during the Games, taking home 1 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze
Random fact: In April of 2011, she ripped her knee apart tearing both her ACL and MCL on vault, but this hasn’t stopped her as was obvious in London 2012.
Alexandra Raisman (USA)
Age: 18
Hometown: Needham, Massachusetts
How to get there?: Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
Specialties: floor exercise, uneven bars, individual all-around – Alexandra is now the proud owner of 2 gold medals and 1 silver
Random fact: Alexandra finished up her last year in high school with online classes so she could focus on London 2012.
