It’s never a bad choice to hit Edinburgh.
Scotland’s capital city has a wealth of top notch tourist destinations whether you’re looking for history, monuments, or even just a plain old glass of scotch.
Throw in some of urban Europe’s best scenery and we’ve got a great city escape just waiting to happen.
Here are 10 reasons to visit Edinburgh.
It’s Two Towns for the Price of One
The distinct contrast between the narrow, winding, cobblestone streets of Edinburgh’s Old Town and the more boulevard heavy neo classical New Town might just make you feel you’ve been on two separate city breaks.
The Fringe Festival
The biggest arts festival in the world featured over 50,000 performances in 313 venues in 2015. The festival’s open access policy allows anyone to participate and the shows range from comedy to dance to theater to music and much more.
The Scott Monument
This towering Gothic structure stands on famous Princes Street and was built in the memory of famous author Sir Walter Scott. Climb to the top up the narrow staircase and grab a great view of the city for just £4.
Edinburgh Castle
This historic 12th Century fortress is easily the most famous building in the city and keeps watch over the city from Castle Rock. Check out the amazing panoramic view from here and make sure you go inside to check out the Crown Jewels.
The Scotch Whisky Experience
Just a stumble from Edinburgh Castle you’ll find the world’s foremost whisky museum. It’s home to the world’s largest private collection of Scotch whisky not to mention a great tour to explain just how the ‘golden nectar’ comes to be – just don’t duck out before the tasting 😉
The View from Arthur’s Seat
The main peak of Edinburgh’s hills rises to 250.5 meters and offers a great, if fairly easy hiking opportunity. It’s a great place to grab some fresh air and another outstanding panoramic view of the city.
The Royal Mile
This main thoroughfare of Edinburgh’s Old Town is the city’s busiest due to tourists heading to Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace, the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland.
The Cuisine
Believe it or not Edinburgh is one of Europe’s most award winning cities from a culinary standpoint. You may not be brave enough to try haggis but an afternoon tea at luxurious Georgian Tea Room The Dome is a good place to start.
For more savory endeavors try the Douglas Fir cured salmon and a Scottish beef fillet at Wedgwood.
Rose Street
This narrow New Town street is famous for the shopping options but mostly for it’s huge list of bars and public houses. You’ll find humorously named pubs like Dirty Dicks and Filthy McNasty’s – but are you and your drinking buddies up for the Rose Street Challenge?
The National Museum
To understand the history of Scotland look no further. The collections relating to Scottish culture, history, and antiquities are long but if that’s not your cuppa there’s plenty of science, natural history, and world culture to go around.
